For the past few months, I’ve been trying my best to make more recipes at home, to reduce my consumption of ultra-processed foods. In my opinion, there’s no realistic way to avoid ultra-processed food all the time. But making changes where I can has been helpful. One of the recipes I came up with was for this homemade electrolyte drink. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Living in Florida and keeping a regular workout routine means I drink a lot of electrolyte drinks (to replace the electrolytes lost in sweat.)
For years, I’ve sworn by Liquid IV, and still love to keep these on hand for when I don’t have time to whip up my homemade electrolyte drink.
While I still love to have the Liquid IV packs on hand for convenience, this homemade electrolyte drink has become my go-to. It’s delicious, easy to make, and contains the electrolytes you’re looking to replace in electrolyte water (potassium, sodium, magnesium, calcium, and more.)
The recipe I normally make uses lime as the fruit flavor, but you can use any fruit you want. I’d recommend other citrus fruits like orange or lemon.
My recipe is also made with coconut water, which is a great source of electrolytes, and I love the flavor of it. If you’re not a coconut fan, you can omit that from the recipe, and double up on all the other ingredients (including water) instead.
When should you drink electrolytes?
It’s important to stay hydrated by drinking water every day. But if you’re active and exercise often, electrolytes can be a great addition to your hydration routine.
Especially if you are an endurance athlete (or do cardio exercises such as running, biking, or swimming) — staying properly hydrated is essential.
As for when you should drink electrolytes, Dietitian Rayven Nairn recommends drinking 24 fl oz before exercise, and another 16-24 fl oz after, depending on how much you sweat. Nairn also recommends drinking electrolytes during your workout if you’re going to exercise for over 45 minutes (source).
This will vary from person to person, so try out different amounts, and drink electrolytes at different times. You’ll learn what works best for you and can stick with it!
Ingredients You’ll Need…
Add these 4 ingredients to your grocery list:
- coconut water
- limes (or fruit of your preference, citrus is recommended!)
- maple syrup
- salt
You’ll also need water and ice, and I’d recommend a shaker bottle for easy mixing.
